About Wolfeboro

More than 200 years ago, New Hampshire's colonial Governor John Wentworth built a summer home on the shores of what is now called Lake Wentworth. He came to his "mansion" during the summer and was followed by others who discovered the quiet and charm of the area.

Wolfeboro, New Hampshire has the distinction of being known as "The Oldest Summer Resort in America."

Historic Facts

  • Wolfeboro was incorporated in 1770
  • Our town was named after General James Wolfe
  • Lake Wentworth was named after Governor Wentworth
  • Governor Wentworth died in 1820 at age 93
